The Turning

The Turning is a painting about the beauty of change. The moment a season shifts and the whole world catches fire. It is not about loss. It is about the extraordinary generosity of a world that burns brightest just before it rests, and the wisdom of those who know how to stop and witness it.

The Turning is an original acrylic painting on board, part of my ongoing Australian landscape work. It began the way these paintings always do, with a pour I don't control, then trees and cockatoos worked in loosely and fearlessly to the last mark. The blues and pinks run right through it, and two small figures stand at the top of the hill where the quiet is.

I grew up in a house that smelled of oil paint, watching my father work without ever being taught. Thirty years on, my paintings stand on loose, accidental grounds, half accident, half intention, made somewhere in the middle where the paint and I meet. My cockatoos and figures are all one thing: my family, painted over and over in a glowing landscape, with the conviction that real happiness comes from within.
