ODD Studio is an art & design studio in Melbourne. Co-founders Lauren O'Donnell & Adam Dwyer curate intricate hand drawn illustrations through their latest collection, The Suburb Series.
Crafted with a blend of ink, the pieces display the unique architectural form of each suburb, rich in information about planning, history, geography and solar patterns.
Both architects, O'Donnell & Dwyer have a deep understanding of layering cities and how art can evoke an emotional connection to a place and time.
Collingwood, a vibrant inner-city suburb of Melbourne, boasts a rich and storied history. The narrative is deeply intertwined with Smith Street, a bustling thoroughfare that forms the heart and soul of the neighbourhood.
Running through the core of Collingwood, Smith Street has a history as colourful as the suburb itself. Once a dirt track, Smith Street has evolved into an urban hub renowned for its arts scene, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants.
Our rendition captures Smith Street from above and its intricate network of surrounding arterials and side streets.
Drawn on the date of the autumnal equinox, the piece captures the sun directly over the equator, marking the beginning of the fall when the sun is at its lowest point and the time when the spectacle of shadow is most present across the city. The render reveals this active relationship of ‘Shadow’ and ‘Light’ in Melbourne's public spaces, arterial streets, and residences.
As the city’s urban settlement is evolving, Collingwood provides a memory of which shadows are cast from the year 2023.
