ODD Studio is an art & design studio in Melbourne. Co-founders Lauren O'Donnell & Adam Dwyer curate intricate hand drawn illustrations through their latest collection, The Suburb Series.
Crafted with a blend of ink, the pieces display the unique architectural form of each suburb, rich in information about planning, history, geography and solar patterns.
Both architects, O'Donnell & Dwyer have a deep understanding of layering cities and how art can evoke an emotional connection to a place and time.
Fitzroy was planned as Melbourne’s first suburb, laid out in a grid plan and is characterised by a rectangular grid of medium-sized streets and narrow back lanes. Its built form is a legacy of its early history from a mixture of land uses, producing a diverse range of typologies and scales. Our rendition illustrates the parameters of Nicholson St to Napier St, highlighting the infamous Rose St Artist’s Market, Brunswick St and Fitzroy Swimming Pool.
Drawn on the date of the autumnal equinox, the piece captures the sun directly over the equator, marking the beginning of the fall when the sun is at its lowest point and the time when the spectacle of shadow is most present across the city. The render reveals this active relationship of ‘Shadow’ and ‘Light’ in Melbourne's public spaces, arterial streets, and residences.
As the city’s urban settlement is evolving, Fitzroy provides a memory of which shadows are cast from the year 2021.
