Artwork Description

Scene of a guy pissing in the gutter along Brisbane Street, Ipswich at eight o'clock in the morning in full view of the traffic going by. Was he even aware he was doing something a little bit...odd? Honestly by the vacant expression on his face I don't think he did. Is this the Australia of the future? Yes it is. The Australia we are seeing more and more of? Yes and this is just the start. Shop doorways filled with sleeping bags at night? Parks with tents pitched just beyond the playgrounds? Folks wandering around yelling at the sky, waving arms and talking to themselves as shoppers pass by doing anything to avoid eye contact? Cars that have become mobile housing moving to a different area every couple of days? Fellas sprawled out on the cement out the front of major shopping outlets with his groceries strewn everywhere. I asked the cashier if anyone had called the ambulance in case he's having a diabetic episode. She shrugged and said he'd been pissing up all afternoon and wouldn't leave the bench and that's where he ended up. A reality that always existed but not in plain view of so many streets and parks now? Hopelessness compounding by the week as a result of skyrocketing everything? Meanwhile our Guv Bruv continues cramming fly-ins by the thousands per week into towns and cities that can no longer cope. Folks cannot cope anymore and like a computer that's been left on for a week, begins glitching all over the place. This country has become a Martian landscape swarming with spiders of every kind. Unrecognizable to what it once was. How is the real pandemic, the pandemic of hopelessness going to be solved? By giving out free VR Headsets to under-20’s so they can avoid reality a bit longer? Sadly I don't see a whole lot around that gives a lot of hope for the bleak future in front of us all.
