I’m a mixed media and multi-discipline artist originally from South Africa. My creative journey has been a vibrant tapestry of experiences, and I’ve recently embarked on a new chapter in Perth, WA, after spending over 18 years as an expat in Asia.
My passion for art began in my early 20s, creating fabric paintings that I turned into throw pillows and designing artwork for a guest house in Johannesburg. This initial foray into art set the stage for my evolving career. Over the years, I explored different facets of creativity, from designing invitations and posters to delving into digital design after taking a Photoshop course in Bangalore, India, in 2006.
When I moved to Jakarta, Indonesia, in 2008, I was fortunate to have a studio where I could dive deeper into painting. In 2011, I took a significant step by opening a small creative design studio in Bangkok, Thailand. There, I crafted personalized statement wall art, stationery, and city-inspired homewares, showcasing my versatility at various fairs and markets.
Returning to Jakarta in 2017, I continued to develop my craft, selling original paintings and personalized digital art through various channels, including Overseas Women’s Associations. Now, as I settle into Perth, I’m excited to bring my diverse experiences and influences into this new creative phase.
I see my artistic style as adaptable and innovative. I enjoy blending traditional techniques with digital design tools to create contemporary pieces that merge abstract realism with elements of photographic collage. My work spans various mediums, including acrylics, watercolors, inks, and monoprints, and I love incorporating digital manipulation in Photoshop. I believe combining these different mediums results in visually engaging and conceptually rich art.
My creative process is inspired by a wide array of sources, from patterns and floral displays to portraits, scenic views, emotions, and music. I use photo references, to spark ideas. By merging traditional methods with digital components, I explore a broad spectrum of concepts and possibilities. Sometimes, I choose to present digital pieces as prints, while at other times, I transform them into physical paintings. I also enjoy converting experimental works in acrylics, watercolors, monoprints, and ink into digital art prints. When I have a clear concept or feel inspired to create abstract work, I produce final pieces on paper, board, or canvas.
Abstract Expressionism has been particularly influential in my work, allowing me the freedom to express and experiment with gestural abstraction. However, my eclectic taste means that I draw inspiration from a wide range of artistic styles and themes. This diverse influence fuels my desire to explore and experiment continually.
Ultimately, my goal is to create art and designs that bring the same joy and happiness that I felt while making them. I hope that my work resonates with viewers and that they experience the same pleasure and connection with my pieces. As I embark on this new creative journey in Perth, I’m eager to share my unique vision and continue exploring the boundless possibilities of art.
