Ascending The Boulder-field (scroll)

This oversized abstract painting, "Ascending the Boulder-field," captures the essence of a challenging climb high on kunanyi's Lost World Track. The artist uses oil and acrylic on canvas to depict the optical illusions and physical demands of navigating a steep landscape of dolerite boulders. The work evokes the feeling of scrambling over rough stone, searching for faded track-markers amidst the ancient geology.

Painted in many layers of flat colours, beginning with bright red and yellow (the colours of the markers on the Lost World Track) and ending with earthen tones, that are blurred so that the bright under painting shows through.

Inspired by the experience of ascending this unformed track, the painting suggests the fading mark of humanity within a timeless natural world. The abstract expressionist style and use of frottage and blurring techniques create a sense of depth and movement, inviting the viewer to contemplate the passage of time and the relationship between humans and the environment. The colours and textures evoke the earthiness of the stone and the subtle details of the landscape.
