Artwork Description

Acrylic on canvas

Signed on the back.

The work is painted on both sides of the canvas, the second image is the the back of the work. It is not my intention that the work be framed but hangs as a tapestry as it is unstretched canvas. It will be sent with hanging system in place.

This work was made following virtual exploration of open cut mines from around Australia by way of google satellite images. This out-of-this-world vantage coincided with solitary wandering along the Sydney coastline and the drama of these encounters led to the development of an experimental process of drawing. The canvas catches traces of the forces within the studio, be it mixing and pouring, wind blowing droplets of thinned paint, the crushing of pastels or gravity as dots fall from an eye-dropper. The substance of paint is made complex in light of New Materialist philosophy which reconsiders the liveliness of all matter, and this work follows this line of thought.
