Artwork Description

Artist’s Statement:

As the artist behind this piece, I, Al Remo, found my inspiration in the delicate dance of modern family life. My painting, 'Together But Apart: A Tale of a Modern Family', is an oil on canvas that depicts a moment that is all too familiar in today’s world. With a nod to the beloved Norman Rockwell, I wanted to capture the essence of the family but through the lens of our modern, technology-driven society.

In this painting, you’ll find a family in their home – the children playing on their iPhones and iPads, and the parents in the kitchen, both engrossed in their phones. This scene, familiar in many households, made me reflect on how, despite being physically together, each person is lost in their digital world. But what about those who crave our attention and affection?

In the background, the family’s pets tell their own story. The dog, with sad eyes, looks directly at us, longing for connection - its empty food tray is a symbol of neglect. And the cats, they are up to their antics trying to open a door, perhaps to escape this world devoid of human interaction.

For me, this painting is not just about what we have lost, but also about the humour and the ironies of our modern life. The animals trying to escape the disconnected family add a playful layer, but they also make you ponder.

As an artist who has spent over two decades mastering different styles, I wanted to bring spontaneity and directness to this piece, with a hint of craftsmanship and refinement. Through 'Together But Apart', I invite you to take a moment to reflect on the relationships that truly make a house a home and to perhaps find a balance in this ever-evolving digital age.

Excitingly, 'Together But Apart' is one of the very first pieces in my new 'Modern Family Series'. By acquiring this painting, you are not only owning a piece of art but also supporting me in continuing my journey as an artist, enabling me to create more works that explore and comment on contemporary life.

Artist Bio

Ali Reza Moeinian, known in the art world as Al Remo, is a fine artist with a touch of filmmaking in his portfolio. Born on September 21, 1980, in Tehran, Al Remo's passion for art was evident from a young age. He nurtured his talents through formal education, completing a Diploma in Fine Arts and Cinematography in Tehran before relocating to Auckland, New Zealand.

In Auckland, Al Remo focused his energies on painting. His artworks are celebrated for their heartfelt depth and masterful brushwork. His use of colour and light brings a sense of immediacy and connection to his pieces, and his subjects are rendered with an honesty that speaks to the viewer.

Al Remo's painting style is characterized by spontaneity and directness, with a subtle, well-developed sense of craftsmanship. His works, often centred around portraiture and domestic scenes, have an accessible charm, balancing between the evocative and the playful. He draws inspiration from various sources, including the works of John Singer Sargent and Norman Rockwell. However, Al Remo's art is distinctly his own, forged through years of exploration and dedication.

While painting remains at the core of his creative expression, Al Remo also dabbled in filmmaking. He has produced a few short films and worked on a feature film, always with an artistic lens, but it's in the realm of painting where his true passion lies.

Thematically, Al Remo often explores ideas associated with domesticity and interior spaces. His art conveys the richness of everyday life and the inner worlds of the characters he portrays. The subtlety in his brush strokes and the luminosity in his palette create a sense of movement and light that is captivating.

In his journey, Al Remo has also engaged in a few entrepreneurial ventures, but these play a secondary role compared to his dedication to the arts.

Today, based in Sydney, Australia, Al Remo continues to produce art that resonates. His work has been exhibited in various galleries and is held in private collections. Through his paintings, Al Remo invites viewers into a world of emotion, colour, and light.
