Artwork Description

Reproduction Print on paper

Signed and numbered on the front.

A study of the rear of Penders Buildings in Ellenborough St, Ipswich AUS. The collective rear yards of Penders and adjoining sites, which are bounded on the north by the railway line, are a public carpark which runs from street to street and serves as a busier than expected pedestrian thoroughfare. I was attracted by the old weathered facades with their endless wires, pipes and service equipment of all manner and description; by the upper floors which are residential rooms; and by the tin shed on the right hand side which was the rice store for Papa’s Sushi and Rice, a business which closed in 2018. While I sat and sketched, the deliveries kept arriving via the comings and goings of the car. I concluded, rightly or wrongly, that the boxes stacked against the wall were filled with daily newspapers.
