DARLING AND WEST ... Ed. 5 of 50

The former Halleys Bakery on the corner of Darling St East and West St, Ipswich AUS was built in 1916 after operating on the site from the late 1800s. The old brick bakery has been occupied by a variety of hospitality businesses since it’s closure as a bakery in 1964. I did the drawing in the dying days of the café Coffee Anda. The building reopened in late 2018 as Bakehouse Steakhouse.

The drawing itself is a play on technical drawing where the building views are sometimes drawn flat and sometimes in perspective. I also combined the flat elevations from different streets into a single edifice indicated by the join and fold notations. The main gable facing Darling St East has been bisected and joined to the West St façade. Darling St East has a cranked street boundary indicated by the fold line on the drawing. The Coffee Anda signs are greyscale photos of the actual cafe signs.

I’m an artist and a member of Urban Sketchers Brisbane with a 50 year design background in architecture, urban design, landscape architecture and graphics. My output consists primarily of sketches and hybrid drawings [digitally edited and assembled] which depict local street views. Between 2018 and 2025, I’ve been a finalist and prize winner in a number of Brisbane, Ipswich and Grafton regional art awards as well as ArchiGraphicArts [Moscow]; winning a first prize in drawing at this year’s Brisbane EKKA. I have been invited to exhibit my work at the Venice Architecture Biennale but can’t afford the starting price. My sketches are included in the World Of Urban Sketching by Stephanie Bower published in the United States in late 2022. In 2024 I attended AsiaLink Sketchwalk Penang as an invited urban sketching demonstrator. Aside from hand drawing which is a great pleasure, much of my work is an exploration of the meeting of hand and computer ... the meeting of craft and industrial process.
