Artwork Description

Garrigarrang nura – by Alanah Jarvis.
Garrigarrang nura means sea country in the language spoken by the Eora people in Sydney and who have lived there for thousands of years. Garrigarrang embraces every part of Australia’s coastline, the beaches, the sea, plants, animals, estuaries and islands. With the deepest respect, this painting pays tribute to the rich cultures and spiritual traditions of the Salt Water People who call sea country home, and the way they live with nature.
Aren’t we lucky in Australia to have such a vast country, from the Humpback Highway across to Ningaloo Reef, with whale sharks, world class waves and pristine beaches all at our doorsteps.
This painting pays tribute and respect to Australia’s first peoples and that of the Salt Water People. It is placed on professional grade canvas and the sides have been painted to create a faux frame.

Artist Bio

Alanah Jarvis is an Australian artist whose Abstract Weathered Series explores the raw beauty of nature shaped by time. Her richly textured paintings are inspired by the surfaces of the earth and landscapes shaped by wind and water. Through layering and erosion-like techniques, Alanah captures the quiet power of weathered materials, transforming natural imperfections into striking visual stories. These works bring depth, character and a grounded, organic presence into the home.

Each piece reflects a fascination with the marks time leaves behind, the way colour fades, textures shift and surfaces tell silent stories. With earthy palettes and tactile surfaces, Alanah’s paintings create a sense of place, something enduring, elemental and beautifully imperfect. Her art complements modern spaces with natural warmth, drawing people in to look closer, feel more and connect to the world around them.

Alongside this body of work, Alanah also paints her Realistic Ocean Series. Seascapes that capture the expansive light and movement of the coastline. These oil paintings reflect her love of the ocean’s shifting moods and timeless beauty, bringing a sense of space, breath and natural energy into any setting.
