Artwork Description

Progress explores the idea that Brisbane’s growth, although at times strikingly beautiful: for instance the creation of an architecturally stunning new bridge to adorn our iconic River - is ultimately, at it’s core, simply a monument to corporate greed. The rich always want more.

Progress questions where this convenient new pedestrian bridge really leads; and at what cost? and to whom?

Another step to a brighter future for Brisbane? Or a gateway to loss and heartache for those that dare to cross?

I have tried to represent this idea by leaving the older buildings in the background grayscale, devoid of colour - questioning whether growth is always improvement.

Our society seems to be obsessed with the idea that things have to be shifting for there to be improvement. I want my work to represent the contrasting Australia: from the beauty and serenity of the Australian bush; to the ever-expanding and changing Australian urban vistas; from my home in Brisbane to others which I maybe lucky enough to explore.

Artist Bio

I am intrigued by the beauty in all things – I strive to notice it wherever possible – I want to capture moments and seal them in time for all to enjoy.

I love how colour and light dances on ordinary objects, making the everyday - extraordinary.

I am student of art and I hope to be for the rest of my life but I went through a decade-long period without creating.  I tried my hand at a few things, but it wasn’t until the birth of my children and the Pandemic that my passion for painting was rekindled. I’ve promised to never stop creating again – prioritising art in my life, time in my studio, and adventures that inspires.

Landscapes – natural and man-made, are my passion. I’m fascinated with architecture, evolving skylines and natural country. The juxtaposition of orthogonal vs. fractal – challenges me to grow and advance.

Palette knives give me freedom from perfection. My heavily textured pieces are achieved by adding gel-medium to my acrylic paints creating thick and rich effects and giving life to my paintings.

I explore themes of creation and destruction, man vs nature. This idea is emerging in my piece “Progress” where I muted the background structures - Questioning if the building of a new and beautiful bridge to a casino is a symbol of Brisbane’s progress or just an example of more corporate greed?

Our society seems to be obsessed with the idea that things have to be shifting for there to be improvement. I want my work to represent the contrasting Australia: from the beauty and serenity of the Australian bush; to the ever-expanding and changing Australian urban vistas; from my home in Brisbane to others which I maybe lucky enough to explore.
