Artwork Description

Because the Vesica Piscis symbol shows up so often in nature and human history there are varying meanings associated with it. One thing most people can agree on is that it is a significant symbol.

Some view the Vesica Piscis as a Christian symbol due to its similarities to the “Jesus fish.” It also mimics the shape of the female vagina and is therefore viewed as a symbol of femininity, birth, and sexuality.

In my soul, I was inspired from a spiritual viewpoint that says that if we recognize the circle on its own as Source Energy (God or Goddess, whichever you prefer), the Vesica Piscis represents the creation of the “womb of The Universe.” Think of a single circle as a Source of Energy, adding a second circle represents the spark of creation when the universe is born. It is the reason I did a complex composition in the centre, in the uterus. This idea is enforced with its similarities to the shape of the vagina, the starting place of birth on a human level. It is enforced again by the fact that it is the starting place of most sacred geometry.

This is why for or many, the Vesica Piscis symbol is considered very sacred. On a spiritual level, it represents creation, birth, and the joining of spiritual and physical. Take this a step further, and without the Vesica Piscis, sacred geometry would not exist, and we would not exist.

Artist Bio

Alejandra Sieder is a Spanish-Australian artist who is currently living and working in Sydney, Australia. Sieder’s paintings are an abstract interpretation of her personal perception of the world around her and an exploration of the introspective self.

1.- EXPRESSING CONSCIOUSNESS:

Given that Sieder’s paintings are an exploration of consciousness and interiority, each work is different as it expresses a different mental process. While some pieces feel sombre and almost claustrophobic others are far softer and lighter, transmitting an atmosphere of hopefulness. Her work centres on the analysis of the human condition and how we respond to the situations we are confronted with.

2.- SUBJECTIVITY & MATERIALITY:

Sieder’s works start as personal subjective pieces, but once in the public realm move farther away from the personal and psychological, given the non-objective nature of abstraction. Sieder uses an innovative range of materials in her pieces, such as oil, acrylic, sand, ink, iron shavings and resin. These materials add an impasto physicality to the canvas that brings a new dimension and mimics her underlying emotional process.

3.- PRIZES & INTERNATIONAL COLLECTIONS:

Sieder has artworks in private and corporate collections and has exhibited in shows worldwide in countries such as Spain, Germany, Norway, Australia, the UK, and the USA. In 2017, 2018 and 2019, Sieder has been selected as a finalist for the Contemporary Art Award in Australia three years in a row.
