I'm an emerging artist amidst studies of contemporary art at uniSA, born and raised on stolen Kaurna land. Painting is second nature to me, growing up in my father's home studio I began scribbling on the walls and never really stopped. My practice now is deeply ingrained in portraiture, focusing on the transient state of identity and immateriality, with an over-arching playfully chaotic mood. While I continue to build my practice, I'm focussed on the physicality of flesh and paint without losing touch with the energetic presence of my subjects. Some major influences for me include Joan Mitchell, Jenny Saville, Elaine De Kooning, Jennifer Packer, etc. I'm aware of female artists' history of underrepresentation and I understand my role as a female artist in contemporary art is part of a larger narrative, this is something I carry with me in my practice which manifests itself in the preference for female portraiture. It is important to me to depict the feminine from a female perspective and challenge the 'muse' prototype and innately sexual tropes prevalent in depicting women in art history.
