Living on the beautiful far south coast of New South Wales, Alison Spurgeon is a popular local artist. Self taught, she currently practices drawing and painting with a plein air group. Her work involves everyday explorations in different media - watercolour, gouache, pastels and mixed media.
Alison's works are inspired by the landscapes and flora of coastal Narooma and surrounds. She experiments with contemporary ways to depict the beaches and bush of the area, while also capturing the figures who frequent these settings. Her artistic practice involves painting from life, often taking photos and finishing the works in her studio.
Her artwork has a graphic, somewhat abstracted style featuring sunny colours and patterns, creating new ways to capture classic coastal scenes. The aim is not realism but more a feeling of place β the heat of the sun, the movement of the waves.
Future avenues she is hoping to explore include working on a larger scale, and delving deeper into the abstraction that makes her work unique.
