Artwork Description

Making Memories is a celebration of the Australian landscape—not as a literal place, but as an emotional terrain shaped by experience, connection, and time. Inspired by the rolling hills, winding rivers, and quiet rural communities of Australia, this work captures fleeting moments that become lasting memories.

Through layered acrylic, pastels, charcoal, and oil sticks, I build the surface intuitively—allowing colour, mark-making, and texture to guide the composition. The pathways, small homes, flowing water, and the gentle presence of a café suggest shared stories, journeys taken, and simple everyday joys. The landscape is imagined yet familiar, echoing the warmth of places where we gather, wander, and belong.
Vibrant earthy tones are balanced with cool blues and fresh greens, reflecting Australia’s diverse terrain—from sunlit hills to tranquil waterways. The expressive lines and layered textures symbolise how memories overlap and intertwine, forming the rich tapestry of our lives.

Framed in Tasmanian natural oak, the work is grounded in its Australian identity, complementing the organic warmth and authenticity of the landscape it portrays.

Making Memories invites the viewer to pause, reflect, and reconnect with their own treasured places and moments—those quiet scenes that stay with us long after we have left them behind.

Artist Bio

With a blend of bold, bright and contrasting colours, Alpana Rai’s work, much like her background, is diverse, multi-layered and passionately creative. Immigrating to Melbourne from her native India more than a decade ago, Alpana Rai is a self-taught, abstract landscape artist who was raised under a rich tapestry of cultural influences, with an immense love for painting and artistic expression.

As oppose to adopting a rigid, controlled technique, Alpana embraces a highly intuitive, spirited approach, grounded in emotional response. Combining memory and experience, and beginning with a desire to describe a specific situation, she continually seeks unique ways to translate her conceptualised scenescapes onto the canvas. Alpana utilises an expressive, rhythmic sense of movement and flow, whilst merging acrylics with mixed media to construct texture and form. Creating a series of paintings simultaneously with no particular end point in mind, allows each work to develop its own distinctive route and establish its history under more liberating means.

Since 2019, Alpana Rai has exhibited extensively across the Melbourne metropolitan area and is a current member of the RedWest Creatives Co-op and the Melbourne and Victorian Artists Inc. In 2021, she gained certifications in Modern Art and Ideas and Post-war Abstract Painting with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. Alpana is Represented by The Toowoomba Gallery in Queensland . Her Works are Sold Nationally and Internationally .
