Artwork Description

Holding Space is to be present β€” with oneself or others β€” without fear or judgment. It means to make room for honest expression, see through the lens of acceptance and compassion, and listen with tenderness. The result enriches deep connection and healing.

It has never been more important to hold space for yourself and others. Faced with intensifying global issues, we are collectively experiencing an underlying sense of loss, change and uncertainty.

As we learn to nurture the art of holding space, we develop constructive practices that encourage respect and peace β€” and cultivate a more authentic, open-hearted and empathetic life.

In the making of the Holding Space Collection, my art practice was gentle and accepting.
1) Appreciating nature's inspiration.
2) Smooth and calm application.
3) Reclaiming pre-used items like packaging and tea bags.
4) Incorporating organic elements such as sand, ash, charcoal, limestone and coffee.
5) Responding to the design flow of how various materials interact.

Each piece is expressed in a textured, robust, organic voice and is part of a diptych. The creative process forced me to slow down β€” breathe β€” and delight in the comforting history that emerged through time. I treasured the quiet pockets throughout my days when I could add another element or story to these pieces.

I hope you feel my invitation in this collection: to experience the warmth and nurture within the artwork.

May this dynamic duo bring a sense of welcome, caring and dependability to your environment.

* These pieces are sealed with Satin Varnish and Cold Wax.

** Sides are painted with black gesso.

Artist Bio

ARTIST STATEMENT

I paint rustic abstracts because I’m committed to the idea that we can discover beauty in the raw and worn β€” and essential stories lie within process. So even my spacious, restful landscapes are hewn with historical etches and theatrical gestural marks.

Inspired by roaming panoramas, organic textures, and thoughtful simplicity, my work intentionally embodies an earthy and effortless aesthetic.

For me, art is an invitation to the curious and open-hearted. I believe the intrinsic value of a painting is in honest expression β€” shared through layers of shadows and light, energy and contemplation.

I want my art to intrigue you with a serene, humble presence β€” to compel you to step closer and explore deeper. I would be delighted and grateful if my work could hold space to offer you this experience.

I hope my artwork feels like home.

BIOGRAPHY

Amanda Butel is an emerging artist of abstract expressionism. She creates meaningful aesthetics inspired by the delicate beauty and drama of landscapes.

Her objective is to have the viewer immerse themselves in a sensory experience. To feel soothed or inspired by the regenerative qualities of natural tones and composition.

Amanda hasn't always painted. She spent several years volunteering in Southeast Asia, using her psychology and counselling background to support teenagers rescued from the sex trade. As a result, she developed a Trauma Recovery Curriculum founded on Narrative Therapy to help reframe survivors' stories with value, purpose and hope. While navigating the barriers of culture and language, Amanda soon realised that the therapeutic processes became more engaging and effective by incorporating creativity. This set her on a path toward Art Therapy.

Amanda fell in love with layering paint. Finding herself rising in the early hours to innovate on canvas, she developed this awakening passion.

Now, her artistic mission is to create with courage, connection and contribution.

Amanda and her family are based on the Sunshine Coast.
