Young Ethiopians are incredibly entrepreneurial. Many start street stalls, many find work in the closest city - all to scrape together that extra cash for a pair of sandals or to help feed their families. However, we found a clever young group springing their sideshow talents on the odd tourist that happened to come their way. My vehicle came flying around a corner on the hill just outside of Konso. Here they were, perfectly positioned, wobbing around on stilts and ready to dazzle us. We had to stop - we just couldn't pass up this encounter with these local boys who were pretty darned proud of their side hustle. "Photo-me-you-pay?" they said.
But this boy: he hobbled himself away from the group, and called for my attention. With that spotlight firmly on him, he showed off his own special set of skills, blowing the other boys out of contention. Then he winked at me - knowing that the takings for his show would be well deserved. He had outplayed the players.
