Our family has travelled extensively in New Zealand as we have family there. I've always been taken with the mountains and how sharply they rise above the rest of the land. They're especially beautiful in very late winter.
On this occasion we were driving down towards Wellington and this mountain was still covered in snow, although the fields and trees below were not. It was such a magical view, full of contrast--I absolutely had to capture it.
This piece is on a 16"x20" stretched deep edge canvas, using water mixable oil paints with a combination of brushes and painting knives, and covered with retouching varnish to preserve the vividness of the blues and greens.
