The water at Huka Falls is the most extraordinary colour; a vibrant turquoise that stands out all the more among the dark greens of the surrounding forest. I'd struggle to believe it was possible if I hadn't seen it for myself.
There's a little pathway that leads to a viewing platform on the other side of the river. A bench seat invites the wanderer to rest a while, to take in the wild beauty and be invigorated by the spray being tossed into the air.
These falls are New Zealand's most visited natural attraction, and it's easy to see why. But far beyond being a destination to tick off on your list, it's a place to appreciate the raw power of water and earth.
