Artwork Description

The central figure is a woodland nymph who is protected by the towering mushrooms that surround her. The mushrooms portrayed have a semi-masculine aura about them, not so much in a phallic sense but more of a strong and stately stance and they protect her whilst she is in a vulnerable foetal position of transformation.

This drawing was inspired by the mushroom season. I took many photos of fungi in the Blue Mountains and in my local park (Sydney park), there were so many beautiful and diverse mushrooms that I felt compelled to draw as many of them as I could.

Mushrooms are full of symbolism and hold so much mystery and many cultures have varying folklore attached to them. I feel drawn to the meaning of how the mushroom indicates visions or the deeper consciousness within us and of their connection between heaven and earth.

Artist Bio

Art has always been a part of my life, from sketching in my text books to covering my school diaries in elaborate designs. I've always been perfecting my craft with hours of line work and shade and have always preferred to learn and understand life through pictures rather than words.Exploring life and afar through my Art has enabled me to see beyond the "norm" and access a different knowledge that doesn't reside in the conscious mind. My works could be described as spiritual, although I tend to view them as "mindscapes". A journey into unknown realms that I link with real life concepts or life teachings. Each work has a meaning or teaching that has differing symbols entwined in the image that is layered and read like a puzzle. I always strive to find balance in my work and give meaningful energy to the subjects I portray.  These extraordinarily fine detailed drawings start with an original “idea” and then my intuition guides me throughout the journey of the piece. Often taking months to complete, each meticulous drawing then reveals itself with numerous symbols uncovered within the drawing. My works invite the viewer to interpret each drawing as to what is relevant to their own memories and feelings. With no right or wrong interpretation, the viewer will ultimately uncover the deeper meanings through correlations with their own lives.
