Sundrenched

“Sundrenched” explores the emotional landscape of home through the lens of the Australian subtropics. The painting depicts a traditional Queenslander immersed in dense botanical growth, where architecture and garden become inseparable. Rather than documenting a specific location, the work draws upon memory and feeling, using heightened colour to evoke the sensory experience of a humid summer evening.

The saturated pinks, oranges and greens move beyond naturalism to express warmth, nostalgia and belonging. The distant horizon offers a sense of openness, while the lush foreground envelops the viewer, creating an intimate threshold between cultivated garden and wild landscape. The empty chair quietly suggests human presence without depicting it directly, inviting viewers to imagine themselves within the scene.

Through “Sundrenched”, I explore how places become repositories of comfort and identity. The work celebrates the restorative power of gardens and the enduring appeal of the Queensland home as a space where nature, architecture and everyday life exist in harmony.

I paint imaginative urban-themed environments, landscapes, gardens, wilderness, mountains and character houses.

The palettes of my paintings are consistently strikingly vivid that bring energy and life to my harmonious compositions.

My work leans towards an abstract stylisation with simplified shapes and block colours, but this is balanced with intricate details and patterns. I like to think of it as a maximalist-minimalist style.

Each piece focuses on a balance between the foreground and background which guides the viewer through the paintings.

My background is in landscape architecture and urban design. My passion for my place making career is an influence on my work. I focus on creating an aspirational “sense of place” and utopic vision, mostly set around my home in the Moreton Bay region in South-East Queensland.
