Figurative artist Amy Marshall creates large emotive pencil drawings that pay homage to the shared experiences of motherhood. Her larger-than-life drawings depict children, often her own, unashamedly rendered through her maternal gaze. She is an experienced photographer, sampling source imagery from her photoshoots that show the strength and resilience of her subjects.
Underpinning her work is the beauty she finds in childhood memories, song lyrics that resonate and the self-doubt, guilt, fears and aspirations that are part and parcel of motherhood. These are interwoven and apparent in the form of handwritten quotes and streams of consciousness that remain partially visible in the artworks. Her drawings act as documentation of the bittersweet & fleeting nature of raising children. A truthful, feminine voice in the longstanding tradition of the narrative of motherhood portrayed through Art.
Amy lives and works in Perth, Western Australia. She studied Fine Art at Wimbledon School of Art, UK. She exhibits regularly in exhibitions and competitions in Western Australia. Photography is an important part of Amy’s practice – she runs her own photography business specialising in family portraiture. Her photographs have been shortlisted and received placements in national and international photography competitions.
Amy has delivered two public art commissions in WA: 'Feathers at Dawn', mural can be seen at Kaarakin Black Cockatoo Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Martin and 'Home is Where the Hutch is...' can be found at the RSPCA's Animal Care Centre in Malaga. To aid her practice, she regularly attends life drawing classes and creates hand-drawn illustrations that will soon be available to purchase as edition prints.
Amy is the mother of two 'loving, sprightly and incredible' children who have 'stretched her, loved her unconditionally and taught her more than all her schooling, and every book she ever has read or is likely to read'. Amy loves coffee dates, Australian winters, England in autumn and watching Hard Quiz with her partner Shane.
