Based on the sunny beaches of Wollongong, Australian artist Amy Mathie draws inspiration from the ever-changing light and natural beauty of the Australian coastline. Working from her studio alongside her two golden retrievers, Amy creates traditional oil paintings that capture the warmth, atmosphere and fleeting moments that make the Australian landscape so captivating.
With a Bachelor of Creative Arts and a background as a high school art teacher, Amy brings a deep appreciation for artistic craftsmanship and traditional painting techniques to her practice. Her work explores coastal landscapes and still lifes, combining a thoughtful approach to composition with a fascination for the subtle interplay of light, colour and atmosphere.
Inspired by the techniques of the Old Masters, Amy builds her paintings through layers upon layers of oil paint, allowing depth, texture and luminosity to develop gradually. This considered process reflects her desire to capture not simply a place or an object, but a particular moment in time—the warmth of sunlight across the sand, the changing colours of the sea, or the quiet beauty of an everyday arrangement.
Having exhibited her work in Sutton, Bowral and Scarborough, Amy continues to explore the enduring appeal of traditional oil painting while celebrating the distinctive beauty of the Australian environment.
Through her paintings, Amy hopes to bring a little of the beach into people's homes: the light, warmth and sense of escape that accompany a perfect coastal holiday. Her work invites viewers to pause, take a breath and reconnect with the simple pleasures of the natural world.
