Artwork Description

Mary and Pomegranate is a watercolor artwork inspired by Mary Magdalene and the symbolic richness of the pomegranate. The piece presents a serene female profile surrounded by pomegranates, blossoms, leaves, and soft washes of blue, rose, and crimson. The golden halo-like detail suggests sanctity and spiritual presence, while the fruit evokes themes of femininity, devotion, rebirth, sensuality, and sacred mystery. Influenced by devotional imagery and a decorative card seen in a shop, the work blends religious symbolism with botanical beauty in a delicate, dreamlike style.

Artist Bio

Anastasia Calvert is a Ukrainian-born Australian artist whose work blends symbolism, abstraction, and nature-inspired dreamscapes. She holds a Bachelor with Honours in Fine Art from the Central Ukrainian State Pedagogical University. After immigrating to Australia, she began exhibiting in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, with her work also shown in Ukraine, Sydney, and Melbourne.

Known for her dreamlike style, Anastasia’s paintings explore the deep connection between humanity and nature, often merging the female form with organic textures, colour, and symbolism. Anastasia Calvert completed a degree in Psychology at UNSW, where her studies deepened her understanding of human behaviour and emotional experience. This insight continues to inform her artistic practice, allowing her to create work that is thoughtful, layered, and deeply connected to the inner life. Through her art, she explores the relationship between creativity, empathy, and healing, seeking to inspire others to connect more meaningfully with themselves, one another, and the natural world.
