Great grandson of esteemed Australian artist John Rowell.
Several years of training (2009-2013) at the Victorian Artists Society under teachers, Ray Hewitt, Stephen Doyle and Greg Smith.
What I really enjoy in my painting is capturing the essence of a scene - a tonal impression, based around the light, the atmosphere, the balance of warm and cool.
I do not aim for hyper-realism, but find I can express my feelings of a scene (and my subconscious mind) in textural brushstrokes; the most comfortable, calm and confident I feel in life is in oil painting.
I am most inspired by the works of the masters, particularly Streeton, McCubbin, Von Guerard, Constable, Singer Sergent and Seago.
Modern artists I also really admire include Warwick Fuller, Jim McVicker and Andrew Tischler.
