Artwork Description

Quiet Terrain — original artwork by Angela Roskell
A eye-catching, multidirectional abstract acrylic painting, stretched and ready to hang.

This piece was created using a blend of fluid techniques that encourage the flow, interaction, and separation of colours. Rich earthy tones of sandstone, clay, ochre, soft sage, metallic copper, ivory, and charcoal grey drift across the canvas in layered patterns, while subtle hints of green and burnt coral emerge from beneath the surface. This natural movement gives rise to fine lace-like cells and intricate textures, forming an organic composition that feels both grounded and expressive.

The artwork is finished with multiple coats of archival gloss varnish for enhanced depth, UV protection, and a soft, light-catching sheen.

“It’s never a wasted day doing what you love and for me that’s creating art.
I love the freedom, the challenge and the chance to create something beautiful that lasts. Fluid acrylics are a fascinating medium to explore, both expressive and scientific with endless possibilities. I never tire of experimenting with what they can do.”
~
For over a decade, Angela has worked exclusively with fluid acrylics, refining a distinctive approach that balances control with spontaneity. Her work moves between quiet atmospheric passages and areas of strong directional flow and contrast, guided by subtle shifts in pigment density and paint behaviour. Intricate lace-like structures and hidden cellular details emerge through this process, creating layered compositions that invite the viewer to explore the entire surface of the work.
~
Inspired by Australia’s diverse and striking landscapes, Angela draws from the places she has called home. The lush rainforests of Northern New South Wales, the golden beaches of Queensland, and the vast mineral-rich terrain of Western Australia often find their way into her work as abstract impressions rather than direct depictions. Working intuitively with the movement of paint, she allows the material qualities of the medium to echo the layered energy and shifting structure of the natural world, giving her paintings a strong sense of movement and presence.
~
Angela’s work has found a place in homes, hotels and workplaces across Australia, Europe, Asia and the Americas, often chosen by collectors who respond to its sense of depth, balance and connection to landscape. She is a Bluethumb Top 10 bestselling artist (2021–2023) and a finalist in both the Bluethumb Art Prize (2021, 2023) and the Art Lovers Australia Art Prize (2022).

After stepping back to travel for 18 months, Angela has returned to Australia with a renewed vision and fresh collections that bring her signature fluid language into a new chapter. Alongside her own practice, she has mentored emerging artists in her technique, helping to shape the next generation of contemporary fluid art in Australia.
