Artwork Description

This painting is one of a series of "birds-eye-view" beaches. The challenge is in choosing the colours and applying layers in watery paint to enable it to run, but still be controlled by the brush. The joy is in having no expectations, but then making waves appear where the colours change.

At the end of summer the water is low in the creek. A clump of trees and canna lilies thrive in a rocky outcrop. As the last of the sun’s heat and light recedes, the coloured leaves appear illuminated and their reflected colours sparkle in the water. This painting on canvas was constructed using moulding paste to build up areas of gold leaf reflections and the birds wingspans. Ink was used to highlight the wing tips. The aim in careful placement of the elements of sky, sea and birds was to achieve a unity and an aesthetically pleasing quality at first glance.
