Artwork Description

This small-scale work captures a fleeting moment of quiet drama — a lone sailboat navigating restless waters beneath a brooding, cloud-laden sky, with snow-capped mountains standing sentinel in the distance.

The impasto technique was central to realizing this vision. Thick, sculpted strokes of oil paint give the sea its physical energy — the waves don’t merely appear to move, they feel like they move, rising and falling in actual relief across the surface. The texture of the paint becomes the texture of the water itself, blurring the line between representation and material reality.

The composition is built on tension and contrast. The small sailboat, humble in scale against the vast seascape, speaks to the enduring human impulse to venture into the unknown — fragile yet deliberate. The green mountains, dusted with snow, anchor the horizon with a sense of permanence, while the churning sky above refuses stillness. Together, they frame a world that is indifferent to the lone vessel below, yet somehow beautiful in that indifference.

Colour and form work hand in hand here. The cool greys and whites of the clouds echo the snow on the peaks, tying sky to earth across the middle distance. The greens carry both life and coldness simultaneously. The sea holds it all together — restless, layered, alive under the weight of the paint itself.

This painting is ultimately about scale — the smallness of a single craft against the enormity of nature — and the strange courage that smallness implies.

Framed in oak floater frame.

Artist Bio

Indian born, Sydney based visual artist Anjana Rai is a passionate creator, whose reverence for Mother Nature radiates from every corner of her canvas. Foregoing the use of the paint brush in favour of the palette knife, she layers thick portions of oil paints, in a technique known as impasto, to devise impressionistic depictions of florals, land and seascapes. While typically beginning with a basic concept of an image or scene, her works are primarily a union between the external environment and her internal responses.

Breaking with the tradition of depicting fine detail, she embraces a free-flowing, unrestrained style that allows her the independence necessary to experiment with colour portrayal, textured curves, angles and edges. Visualising her work in three-dimensional space, she utilises that view, as well as her innovative artistry, to construct works that showcase the glory of nature, as perceived from her unique cultural and creative perspective.

Since 2019, Anjana Rai’s works have appeared in numerous art shows, galleries and group exhibitions within Australia. Whilst initially exhibiting in Pune, India and in the inner-city suburbs of Sydney, her work has been seen across wider Melbourne and regional Victoria since 2021. She is currently featured in private collections in various states and territories throughout India and Australia.
