Artwork Description

Daisie's choice by Anjana Rai

My painting is an exploration of texture and colour, capturing the delicate beauty of floral arrangements through the tactile medium of oil on canvas. Using a palette dominated by Bluw, pink ,red,  yellow, white, and pink hues with accents of purple, I sought to convey the ethereal quality of flowers in bloom and buds awaiting their turn.

The impasto technique lends a rich, sculptural quality to the canvas, allowing each brushstroke to be felt as well as seen. This textured surface not only mimics the natural contours of petals and leaves but also invites the viewer to engage with the artwork on a sensory level.

The painting, framed in an oak floater frame, is presented in portrait orientation, drawing the viewer’s eye upward to the blossoming flowers and the subtle details of each delicate petal. My signature in the bottom right corner signifies not just authorship but also a personal connection to the piece, a testament to the care and passion invested in its creation.

Ultimately, my aim with this artwork is to evoke a sense of wonder and appreciation for the fleeting beauty of nature, encapsulated in a moment frozen in time on canvas. I hope viewers will find joy and solace in the harmonious blend of colours, textures, and forms that compose this floral tableau.

Artist Bio

Indian born, Sydney based visual artist Anjana Rai is a passionate creator, whose reverence for Mother Nature radiates from every corner of her canvas. Foregoing the use of the paint brush in favour of the palette knife, she layers thick portions of oil paints, in a technique known as impasto, to devise impressionistic depictions of florals, land and seascapes. While typically beginning with a basic concept of an image or scene, her works are primarily a union between the external environment and her internal responses.

Breaking with the tradition of depicting fine detail, she embraces a free-flowing, unrestrained style that allows her the independence necessary to experiment with colour portrayal, textured curves, angles and edges. Visualising her work in three-dimensional space, she utilises that view, as well as her innovative artistry, to construct works that showcase the glory of nature, as perceived from her unique cultural and creative perspective.

Since 2019, Anjana Rai’s works have appeared in numerous art shows, galleries and group exhibitions within Australia. Whilst initially exhibiting in Pune, India and in the inner-city suburbs of Sydney, her work has been seen across wider Melbourne and regional Victoria since 2021. She is currently featured in private collections in various states and territories throughout India and Australia.
