The meadow

In this artwork I explore the dynamic interplay of colour, texture, and form to evoke a sense of controlled chaos and unrestrained beauty. Against a deep, dark greyish background, I employ a bold and expressive use of the palette knife, creating a textured canvas that invites viewers to embark on a visual journey.

Vibrant hues of pink, green, blue, and yellow dominate the composition, intertwining and overlapping in a dance of spontaneous energy. The thick, buttery strokes contribute not only to the visual intensity but also offer a tactile experience that engages the senses.

Amidst this lively tapestry, strategically placed goops of white paint emerge, resembling wild flowers scattered across a meadow. These pristine accents serve as focal points, adding a sense of balance and contemplation to the overall exuberance. The application of white paint in impasto technique enhances their three-dimensional quality, inviting viewers to reach out and touch the illusion of wild blooms.

My intention is to create a work that transcends traditional boundaries, inviting the audience to explore the intersection of abstraction and nature. The dark background heightens the brilliance of the vivid colours, while the illusion of wild flowers provides a point of connection, infusing the piece with a subtle narrative. Through this synthesis of colour, texture, and form, my painting aims to evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a visual symphony of untamed beauty.

Indian born, Sydney based visual artist Anjana Rai is a passionate creator, whose reverence for Mother Nature radiates from every corner of her canvas. Foregoing the use of the paint brush in favour of the palette knife, she layers thick portions of oil paints, in a technique known as impasto, to devise impressionistic depictions of florals, land and seascapes. While typically beginning with a basic concept of an image or scene, her works are primarily a union between the external environment and her internal responses.

Breaking with the tradition of depicting fine detail, she embraces a free-flowing, unrestrained style that allows her the independence necessary to experiment with colour portrayal, textured curves, angles and edges. Visualising her work in three-dimensional space, she utilises that view, as well as her innovative artistry, to construct works that showcase the glory of nature, as perceived from her unique cultural and creative perspective.

Since 2019, Anjana Rai’s works have appeared in numerous art shows, galleries and group exhibitions within Australia. Whilst initially exhibiting in Pune, India and in the inner-city suburbs of Sydney, her work has been seen across wider Melbourne and regional Victoria since 2021. She is currently featured in private collections in various states and territories throughout India and Australia.
