I believe that every expression, every piece must evoke emotion.
Born and raised in NZ, I was greatly touched and influenced by my
ancestry and Maori heritage. Born of a direct decendancy of heroes,
warriors and healers, and surrounded by deeply spiritual artists,
carvers, singers and seers. I grew up with a profound interest in the art
of sincere expression and longed to pursue a life being able to manifest my own depth to
the world.
However, the demands and pressures of responsible single parenthood in Australia have left
me no time until now to pursue a personally artistic career. After spending 2 years battling
cancer It was this life threatening illness, which created the space and time in my life and
allowed me to explore deeper personal meaning through artistic exploration. The isolation
of moving to a new community during a year of chemotherapy and treatment gave me the
time away from social pressures to do the necessary self investigation which this series of
pieces manifests.
Now in remission I am able to share my story with others. Beginning with my own journey,
and moving out to all of the other symbols and stories that influence me to take courage
and stand tall in the world.
I love all forms of art and expression, palette knife painting, pastel, and of course the medium I find most able to capture the concept I am wanting to express is
sculpture, and cold casting metal is a genre I am finding great pleasure in. I am self taught in
all areas of my art, and my willingness to persevere and embrace new mediums and
technologies comes from my employment background as a clothing designer and interior
designer.
