This work was created for entry into the Centre for Creative Health Inaugural Art Prize. The work responds to the theme, 'Healing', and was selected as one of 40 finalists in the prize.
Desolate Sea explores the fluid, non-linear nature of physical and mental healing, and the ebb and flow of regenerating or reconstructing fragments of the body and mind along the way. This work accepts healing as a multi-faceted process that can lead to new ways of experiencing and feeling the world around you β a process that can at times be isolating, unsettling and unfamiliar.
"Desolate and empty is the sea,
and I take my bruises with it.
Grains of sand scrape across my open wounds,
before falling back into the deep water.
Everything touches me,
but nothing sticks.
By morning these wounds will heal,
but the grains of sand that scraped across my open wounds
will be churned up by waves and transported to a distant shore -
fragments of my healing that will never fully heal.
Desolate and empty is the sea."
