A little bit about me ~ ๐
During my early teenage years I studied with Phillipa Stewart-Hall B.Ed โ Art U.N.S.W. Visual Art although I realise over the years I would consider myself largely self taught and always striving to improve my work.
My paintings are generally done in oil as I love the fluidity it offers for blending and allows unique effects to be achieved after a day or two when the paint has developed its own โgripโ . Detailed drawings in pencil and ink are also a favourite. I have used acrylics extensively in the past and occasionally dabble in watercolour as a more portable medium when camping in the outdoors.
My family and friends enjoy travelling and camping/caravanning to quite remote parts of Australia to enjoy some much needed solitude and escape from the busy-ness of suburbia. I spent most of my younger years trailing behind my grandparents through the bush and soaking up all that nature could offer. Whenever possible, I try to switch off from everything around me and study the shapes, tones and colours of my natural surroundings.
Walking into my studio, the smell of oil paint is potent and fills me with immense pleasure. Starting new work is always a little daunting until the underpainting begins and then time stands still. My mind becomes focused and energised. Painting for me, is an all consuming passion that never wanes. I lean towards landscapes but often mix it up to keep challenging myself. My colour palette favours muted and natural tones often found in the outdoors although I am equally compelled to capture seascapes. I am also captivated by aerial views which can often appear almost abstract, asking the viewer to momentarily question the subject. The most satisfying part of the painting is adding the highlights and details. It never fails to surprise me how the simplest dot of light can either make or break your whole subject.
You may find that my personality and sense of humour often comes through in my artwork. I have realised over the years I instinctively see character and soul in houses, animals, trees. and even vehicles. Moody, lonely landscapes appeal to me and this is often reflected in my paintings. Included in many Bluethumb curations, I was recently listed as one of the Bluethumb Top 10 Landscape artists of 2023 which is a great honour.
I am also an interior stylist and this has enabled me to assess my own artworks and how they fit into an interior scheme. Regarding my reproduction prints, I am able to supply additional sizes and stretched canvas prints so please get in touch if you would like a different size.
I hope you enjoy the artworks I have created and thank you for taking the time to find out a little more about me. ๐
