Drawing is one of the oldest forms of human expression. Throughout history, knowledge of drawing has been seen as the foundation for artistic practice and often as a necessary first step to take before putting paintbrush to canvas. However, drawing is also a highly skillful art form in itself; drawn works may be free-flowing sketches made in the moment or hyper-realistic and time intensive.

Like any artform, there are certain established techniques that exist within drawing used to achieve a particular technique, such as hatching, cross-hatching, stippling and shading. Drawings can be performed with a dry medium, such as graphite or charcoal, or a fluid solvent, such as marker, pen or ink, and can of course be executed along the whole spectrum of colour. Leonardo da Vinci continues to be celebrated for his skills in drawing, as do Henri Matisse and Rembrandt.

The artworks in this collection provide insight into the skill and value of many different types of drawings. Check back soon for new additions!
