Coastal Holiday

This artwork captures a relaxing day at the beach. Using a palette knife, the oil paint has been applied thickly to the canvas, creating dramatic texture. The visual element of texture in art evokes an array of emotions for each individual. The 3 dimensional nature of an artwork provides an interesting viewing experience, especially as the moving light of day casts different shadows at every hour. With texture, the artwork comes to life through the bold strokes of each colour. The technique of using a palette knife to thickly apply paint is called ‘Impasto’. This technique creates the sense that the paint is coming out of the canvas.
