Artwork Description

For only rarely have we stood back and celebrated our soils as something beautiful, and perhaps even mysterious. For what other natural body, worldwide in its distribution, has so many interesting secrets to reveal to the patient observer?” — Les Molloy

''Residuum'' - Limited Edition 1 of 1.

'Residuum' is an abstract aerial photograph of salt ponds located on the Eyre Peninsula, between Mt Hope and Cummins. This came from a number photographs taken nearly a year ago, and only reminded by a collector of 'Bratton's Way' of this regions natural beauty.

This photo is one that I have sat on for a while, contemplating its unique style. While abstract and largely absent of bright colours normally associated with salt ponds and lakes, it has subtle blue and golds, framed by the barron landscape of a pond which was largely void of water, leaving behind beautiful textures left behind by trees, soils and vegetation - the residuum...

The word residuum in the dictionary meaning the residue, remainder, or rest of something... a quantity or body of matter remaining after evaporation.

Cheers, and safe travels 😊 Ash.

Artist Bio

I’m an Australian photographer specialising in abstract landscape photography, exploring the quiet relationship between land, pattern, and perspective. Through aerial imagery and considered composition, I aim to reveal the subtle geometry and rhythm that naturally occurs within the environment — often transforming familiar terrain into something contemplative and unexpected.

Much of my work is captured across South Australia’s diverse landscapes, from mineral-rich coastal flats to expansive inland textures. I’m particularly drawn to repetition, striation, and tonal contrast, and how these natural elements can create images that feel both minimal and visually engaging. By shifting perspective, I enjoy highlighting details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

My approach is intentionally simple. I try to let the subject speak through balance, form, and light, allowing the natural structure of the landscape to become the focus. The result sits between fine art and observation, with the hope that each piece brings a sense of calm and quiet intrigue.

I’ve been fortunate to have my work recognised through several photographic competition finalist placements, including The Australian Photographic Prize, where I was awarded a Gold Medal. While recognition is always encouraging, my main focus is creating images that feel timeless and considered.

Ultimately, I aim to create photographs that invite people to slow down and see the landscape differently — discovering beauty in subtle detail, and bringing a sense of stillness into the spaces where the work is displayed.
