The Floating World, or in Japanese 'Ukiyo' (floating, fleeting, or transient world), was an expression of the pleasure-seeking aspects, of the Edo-period Japan (1600β1867). Today in modern Japan, the Edo period and the Ukiyo is only a transient memory. It is intangible and elusive and in stark contrast to modern Japan. I came to understand much of the Floating World when I lived in Tokyo for close to five years. This is the emotional symbolism of the elusiveness of Ukiyo and is painted in the style of abstract expressionism.
When monks stare while mediating, at a Japanese rock garden, eventually it becomes like water. So too, it is my hope that this work becomes Ukiyo memories.
