Artwork Description

A surrealist oil painting depicting a ballet dancer surrounded by flowing water and fish.

Artist Bio

Aurora Gray is an emerging multidisciplinary artist whose work spans oil and acrylic painting, digital media, and sculpture. With an ever-curious spirit, she constantly experiments with new mediums to push the boundaries of her creative expression. Her practice centres on portraiture and figurative art, often infused with surrealist elements that reflect her inner emotional world.

A recurring subject in her art is the female form, though she does draw men and tries to expand and study other subjects in her work. Pouring her emotions out onto the canvas or into the clay, her work is a cathartic expression of mental health and sadness. Capturing her thoughts and feelings about life, loss and loneliness, but also creating some more happier artworks with fantasy and surrealist elements that she loves so much. In a way bringing the fantasy world to life through her art. She tends to gravitate towards blue as it’s her favourite colour and can be seen a lot throughout her paintings.

She completed a Bachelor of Creative Industries at Victoria University in 2018 then a Diploma of Visual Arts-Illustration at Melbourne Polytechnic in 2019. Her process typically begins with a sketch, resizes it digitally to match the surface she is working on and creates a grid. After transferring that sketch to the selected surface, the painting begins, though methods differ slightly depending on the medium. She prefers oil paint because of the vibrant colours and how it blends, creating smooth skin textures, which can be great when painting the human form.
