Artwork Description

"My Bedroom" is a deeply personal artwork created during Melbourne's peak lockdown, a time when, like many others, I was physically shut off from my friends and the world. But for me, this isolation intersected with a more intimate and internal experience—I was beginning to come to terms with my sexuality.

Typically, my bedroom had always been my sanctuary, a space where I could feel safe, express myself freely, and escape the pressures of the outside world. But during lockdown, that safe space transformed. Without the structure of daily life and the support of community, the walls of my bedroom began to close in. What once brought comfort now felt confining. Time lost its rhythm—day bled into night, weekdays into weekends—and with each passing moment, my bedroom became less of a refuge and more of a cage.

This work reflects that emotional shift. It's about the duality of space: how a room that once held you can also trap you. It captures the psychological weight of isolation, the complexity of self-discovery, and the quiet turbulence of a year where everything stood still, but everything inside was changing.

Artist Bio

Ayden Emini is a Melbourne-born, Sydney-based abstract action painter whose work transforms emotion into motion. His practice is rooted in the belief that memory—both past and present—can be translated through colour, form, and gesture. Each painting becomes a personal excavation, where layers of experience are revealed through dynamic, expressive marks.

Guided by instinct, Emini’s process is raw and immediate. Emotions fuel every movement, whether it’s the weight of memory or the intensity of a present moment. He uses colour as a symbolic language, selecting tones that reflect inner states rather than surface aesthetics. Form and texture emerge organically, often shaped by urgency, rhythm, and release.

With a background that bridges fine art and fashion, Emini brings a sensitivity to material and energy, resulting in works that are both intimate and unrestrained. His paintings reject traditional representation, instead offering emotional landscapes that invite reflection, connection, and presence.

Now living in Sydney, Emini continues to evolve his practice through studio work and live painting, exploring how art can act as a mirror to the subconscious and a release for what can’t be said in words.
