The sight and smell of raw meat at the butchers is a great source of inspiration for me. The piles of pink, pallid flesh await eager customers who are eyeing the choicest cuts and shouting out orders. I like that it infuses a sense of horror into the mundane weekly shop.

Artist Bio

Anna Yao Mei is a Chinese-born Australian artist based in Melbourne. Working primarily with traditional mediums, she creates scenes infused with vibrant color and emotion. Her work frequently explores themes of the strange, the unsettling, and the macabre, inviting viewers to navigate these emotions alongside her. Anna has exhibited in group shows with No Vacancy, fortyfivedownstairs, and untether gallery + studio. She has also undertaken creative projects including wine label design and editorial illustration for Lateral magazine.
