The San or Bushmen are an indigenous people of Southern Africa. Their rock paintings are found in caves and rock shelters all over the area. Some of the finest works can be found in the Drakensberg of Kwa Zulu Natal.
Viewing the paintings and reflecting on them is a deeply reflective and rich experience. Each image is painted with an artists eye but also with the eye of a supreme hunter gatherer. It is as if the artist has captured more than an image, even more than the spirit of the animal, more than the spirit of a hunt, indeed they capture the spirit of a people and time.
I have humbly tried to capture some of this spirit in my painting.
