This painting is the latest step in my combining abstract and figurative styles.
I have always been impressed by the visual impact of pure colours on a black background as seen in the work of some hard edged abstract painters such as Sydney Ball. In this painting the coloured shapes represent portions of landscape so they have soft edges; the complimentary colours of red and green add tension and the shapes are designed to lead the eye around the painting. I wanted the two dimensional shapes to convey a sense of depth and landscape so they get smaller with "distance" and the opposite sides of each of the four sided shapes converge towards a vanishing point at various places on an imagined horizon at the level of the woman's shoulder blades and extending beyond the sides of the painting.
The figurative narrative is one that resonates strongly with me but of course each viewers interpretation and emotional response will vary depending on their life experiences.
The Painting is on plywood which is backed with a timber support frame.
The board is first sealed, the edges are black and the painting is finished with layers of protective varnish. Heavy duty "D" rings and cord are attached so that the painting is ready to hang.
