Heart of the Harbour

While walking around Cremorne Point, I captured a panoramic view of Sydney that truly resonated with me. The striking shape of the clouds, the iconic prominence of the Opera House, and the charm of a Sydney Ferry gliding across the water all came together in a perfect moment.

Cityscapes present a unique challenge, as every detail tells a story, and the balance between realism and artistic interpretation must be carefully considered. In this painting, I focused on achieving harmony between intricate details and a broader, atmospheric perspective.

I’m delighted with the balance I achieved, capturing not just the scene but also the essence of Sydney’s vibrant energy and natural beauty.

I started out with a pencil in hand, drawing portraits and learning to capture emotion through subtle lines and shadows. Over time, I found myself wanting more depth, colour, and freedom and that led me to oil painting.

These days, I love working with oil because of how it lets me explore contrast, light, and mood in a way pencil never could. My subjects are always changing. I’m drawn to anything with character, whether it’s a person, an old car, an animal, or even a building.

For me, painting is about looking more closely and finding something interesting in the everyday and bringing it to life with colour and light.
