Beverly became an artist by accident……..a back accident. Whilst recouperating from an injury in the 90’s, she decided to take a few art classes to keep busy. She was encouraged to apply for a uni course by her lecturer and was surprised when she was accepted. After receiving her degree, she was offered a “graduate in residency” by the university which is only offered to a certain few.. this was at Curtin University in Western Australia where she obtained her degree.
After studies, one of her main interests was Photography, so she set up her own business. Beverly was sponsored on a trip to Cuba and had several exhibitions on her return. When digital photography became more and more popular, it was difficult to continue with the business.
Beverly decided to travel North of WA and ended up in Derby for 5 years. She was offered a lecturers appointment at the local Kimberley TAFE and was supporting the surrounding communities helping with setting up Art centres as well as exhibitions in the Pilbura and the Kimberley. She was also curator for the Kimberley Art Prize for three years and the following year (2011) actually won the Prize herself!
After TAFE came 18 months as Art teacher at the local detention centre where Beverly taught to 1800 refugees (men only) which also included tailoring. This was very popular amongst the men, however there was trouble afoot and she was advised to leave due to medical reasons.
The next step was to St Helens where Beverly had previously bought a house and it was time to move in. It took three years for healing but in that timeframe she met a wonderful group of like minded friends, and was able to slowly come back to her artists’ roots.
She has now realised that she loves all different mediums and has recently been slightly obsessed with Painting on the backs of jackets....these have become quite popular and are all one offs
