This Wall Hanging Will Save-A-Dog or Two

Archibald finalist, Kim Leutwyler, from Bluethumb and Josh Pinkus from Handkrafted are making ripples in the art world. They’ve collaborated on Untitled + Unfinished, a wall hanging constructed using spare wood pieces of reclaimed Western Red Cedar from Josh’s workshop and painted by Kim. Together they worked on the colour palette, leaving all other aspects of the production as a surprise. The project is part of our Created With Care initiative, combining the artistic talents of artists and furniture makers to create one-of-a-kind creations that are being auctioned online for charity.

Josh’s work specialises in recycled timber, salvaged from old houses, buildings and factories. “Kim worked her magic and did a spectacular painting in her signature style,” says Josh modestly. Josh’s quality craftsmanship and eye for detail is a standout. His work is in high demand, having done jobs with clients including Jack Daniels, Estee Lauder, Louis Vuitton, Qantas, Red Bull, Google, Miss Chu, Toby’s Estate and Batlow Ciders to name but a few.

Kim’s current work deals with images of beauty, gender and Queer identity. Kim’s painting ‘Start the Riot’ is currently touring Australia as part of the 2015 Archibald Prize Finalist Exhibition. She also won the Midsumma Visual Arts Prize, and her painting is the hero image for 2016’s LGBTQ Festival in Melbourne. “The mix of pattern and figure is very common in my work, yet working in this structure meant that the finished image is completely different than anything else I’ve made,” explains Kim.

The duo have a difference of opinion when it comes to the challenges during production. “Working with Kim was great and there were no challenges,” says Josh. Kim, however, felt that her biggest challenge was dreaming up anything that she could do to enhance the already beautiful woodwork. “After Josh dropped it off, I didn’t want to touch it for weeks,” admits Kim.

The two artists nominated Save-A-Dog to donate the proceeds from the auction. Save-A-Dog Scheme (SADS) is a community-based not-for-profit animal welfare organisation that saves hundreds of dogs and cats from being killed every year.

They have a no-kill philosophy and provide veterinary care to sick or injured animals so they can live out their natural lifespan. This often involves expensive medical treatment. “SADS relies on the generosity of people like Josh and Kim to help raise funds to ensure the welfare of animals and to help find their forever homes,” says Janet Lowe, a fundraising coordinator from SADS.

Kim and Josh are both animal enthusiasts and share an ever increasing love for dogs. Their social media accounts are evidence of their interest in wildlife. “I guess I’m one of those lesbians who equates their dog to being their fur baby,” exclaims Kim. The team wants to thank the charity for doing a difficult job and looking after neglected beings. They hope the money raised from this auction can help Save-A-Dog continue their good work.
