Artwork Description

Oil on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.

Signed on the front.

This is my interpretation (third attempt) of my memory, as ayoung fellow of 12, of a particular element of the movie "The Robe. " I was fairly affected by the nailing of Jesus to the cross and of my feeling for the torturous pain endured. While there was no actual image of the nails being hammered in, the sterophonic sound of the hammer hitting the pegs and the showing of the rise and fall of the hammer, left quite an impression on me.
However in my research into "crucifixion" I learned that the Romans did not crucify through the hands which sort of left me in a bit of a quandery as to how I depict the scene. I decided that this would not be about a particular crucifixion, that is of Christ, but would be about any crucifixion carried out by the Romans. It was to be more about the cruelty and agonising method of capital punishment which was meant to be as painful and as prolonged as barbarically possible.
My first version was done when I was about 15 and did have the nails through the palms and was done on about an A4 size cardboard exercise book cover which had been sized with rabbit skin glue.
The next version was done years later on a canvas panel about 24" x 18" when "professor Google" pointed out the error of my nails through the palm bit. This one was done some years later when I got the urge to redo it and is changed somewhat to the previous two attempts.

It is done on unframed stretched canvas
It is ready to hang and has plastc encased hanging wire with flat d ring hooks
