Artwork Description

Relative Strangers
The "Relative Strangers" series of paintings is a captivating exploration of the interconnectedness of people, even when they may not know each other well or at all. These artworks delve into the beauty of those spontaneous conversations with strangers that can brighten our day. As someone who initially felt like an outsider in Australia, I found solace and joy in these small interactions. This contrasted with my upbringing in a tightly-knit family, where each individual stood as a pillar of their world, ultimately shaping my perspective and individuality.

One piece from this series, "Common Altar," holds a special place in my heart. It symbolizes my first encounter with the artistic community in Bendigo. I stumbled upon an old church, no longer used for worship but transformed into a haven for life-drawing sessions. Coming from a Christian background, this repurposing of a sacred space struck me deeply. Though initially strangers to each other, the individuals who gathered there shared a unique connection in this unconventional setting.
"Common Altar" beautifully captures the dichotomy between a church's traditional purpose and its contemporary use as an art space. It serves as a reminder that places and communities can evolve, just as our perceptions of them do. This painting reflects my personal journey and artistic vision, resonating with anyone who has experienced the complex interplay of connection and disconnection within their communities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a transformative force, unveiling our shared vulnerability and interconnectedness as a global society. It erased the boundaries that once separated us by race and creed, highlighting our shared humanity. While my journey in this country has been challenging, I've drawn strength from my spirituality, finding inner peace during these trying times. This tranquillity fuels my optimism for the future, motivating me to embrace what lies ahead.
Intriguingly, I've recently embarked on a new journey to delve deeper into the concept of "Relative Strangers." This exploration aims to uncover and share more about the profound connections among people who may seem distant on the surface. So, stay tuned for what's to come as I navigate the fascinating realm of "Relative Strangers."

Artistic Statement: My art reflects the passage of time, capturing diverse emotions and experiences that unfold uniquely for each individual. My creative journey is divided into two epochs: guided by art’s sustenance and my commitment to bearing the art that shaped my existence. This transformation ignited a profound exploration of my creative process, fueled by research, practice, and unwavering dedication to the world of art.
Artistic Philosophy: Research is integral. I scoured junkyards, amassing inspiration from society’s castoffs. Trash becomes inspiration. This approach guides my journey. My collection and paintings have grown significantly. Australia marked a transition from gifting to building a portfolio embodying exploration.
Inspirations and Influences: My work draws inspiration from artists like Picasso, Klimt, Van Gogh, and Gauguin. Picasso’s impact, Klimt’s shimmer, Van Gogh’s resilience, and Gauguin’s devotion to art and spirituality have profoundly shaped my creative journey. The rich thematic quality in my work also reflects my physical, spiritual, and cultural travel. I am shaped by Kerala’s riverbanks, where driftwood and pebbles fueled my creativity. As a Christian Malayalam speaker, I witnessed cultural shifts as my people sought security. My work echoes identity, conflict, faith, and cultural change themes.
Artistic Process: My process involves meticulous exploration of ideas within my mind. Essential illustrations and extensive research ensure emotions and concepts accurately transfer onto canvas. The interplay of techniques, mediums, and styles keeps my art dynamic and ever-evolving.
