The pastel is created on site using soft pastels on paper and finished in the studio with complementary colours and hatching.
The sight of thousands of grass trees flowering the season after fire inspired the image as they receded on ridge after ridge into the distance.
I work with local colour to describe the image and then build colour harmonies of complementary colours to build and more resonant and surprising visual experience as you investigate more of the image.
The pastels are rich in colour and allow intense marks to be made creating energy and vitality in the initial perception and rewarding further viewing with the brilliance of the colour.
