Artwork Description

An abstract mixed media collage exploring tension, control, and what lies beneath the surface. Bold black forms obscure layered fragments of image and text, creating a sense of pressure and partial concealment. Beneath, traces of colour and structure push through, suggesting something unresolved and waiting to emerge. Part of a broader narrative, this work captures the moment before action, where everything is held in suspension, just before it breaks. "Nothing had gone to plan. This was a mess. My mess."

Artist Bio

Brad Smith is a Sydney-based contemporary artist working across collage and mixed media, blending physical materials with digital processes to create layered, textural works. His practice often begins with analogue fragments such as paint, paper and photography, which are then reworked and extended into compositions that feel both raw and refined. His work explores tension and ambiguity, where order breaks down into distortion and meaning remains deliberately open. Influenced by urban environments and the quiet residue of everyday life, his pieces invite viewers to pause and interpret, revealing something different with each encounter.
